Smile

A little when you’re happy

A little when you’re sad

Harder when you’re grieving

Every day, twice a day, when you’re depressed.

A little when you see someone you don’t like

More when you meet someone you like

Through your eyes when you meet the ones you love

Through your teeth for the ones who want to avoid.

Ear to ear like the Cheshire cat

For the naughty moments

An insipid one for the awkward moments

An awkward one for the embarrassing moments.

Smile for a reason

Smile for no reason

Wear the mask of a smile

Hide your truth behind it

It’s the camouflage few see through

And even if they do

It’s the one lie they can’t complain about
