The Importance of Being Earnest

New year’s resolutions. All the promises we make to ourselves but don’t keep. All the good things we want to do for ourselves, but slack on. This year I will hit the gym regularly, this year I will not procrastinate, this year I will learn to cook.

Promises, promises and so many false promises.

Lies that we tell ourselves and not to others.

So, what makes a good new year’s resolution?? What should you do??

You can google the topic and find a number of websites which will help you make a new year’s resolution and give you tips to keep them. But does that help?

Are you a happier person now than you were a year ago?

Have you progressed as a person?

Let me give you the answer bluntly, it’s a big fat NO.

This year, do something different, do something for yourself, do something truly selfish. Become a happier person. Now obviously, this begs the question how.

How do I become a happier person?

Here are some hopefully simple steps to resolve your dilemma:

Step Uno my dear is to accept the fact that you can be happier than you already are.

I am by no means saying that you are an unhappy person. You may or may not be. You may simply be in denial that you are already happy and you don’t need a dose of happy. Well, to you I say what Calvin says, “Happiness isn’t good enough for me, I demand euphoria!”.  And no, no drugs.  So go ahead, and say to yourself, today I will be happier than I was yesterday.

Step Two is to understand that karma is a bitch.

What you give, comes back to you. So stop bad mouthing others. What is your business in what is happening in someone else’s life? Why are you concerned if the person is wearing sweatpants at a black-tie event. It is not your business, so don’t make it. If you bad mouth others, they have a right to bad mouth about you. If you’re mean to them, they will be mean to you. So stop being a jerk to others. We all want others to be nice to us, let’s start by being nice to them.

Step Three is to smile, a lot.

I know you had a stupid day. Like a really irritating day, or maybe today it has been so extreme that you want to go on a blood-lust frenzy. Fine, by all means, go ahead. Now that you have done it, are feeling relieved? If yes, smile. If you have controlled your emotions and behaved like a thorough gentleman or lady, then you should be proud of yourself, and smile. You accidentally thickened your liner, so thicken up the other one and not only look but also feel Fab!  Whatever reason you may find, in the entire day there has been at least one thing that made you smile. Focus on that, and smile. The world feels a little brighter, doesn’t it?

Step Four is to make your primary relationship stable.

Your first and foremost relationship is with yourself. The importance of being earnest, is often underestimated. Be earnest with yourself. It’s not enough to be nice to others, it is important to be nice to yourself too. All you do is pity yourself, victimise yourself, hate yourself and berate yourself. You love everyone; you even love your furniture. When will you start loving yourself? Do little things that make you happy.

When was the last time you bought for yourself your favorite flowers? Do it today. When did you last take that guilt trip to the bakery and gorged on Death by Chocolate? Do it now.

Don’t do these things when you’re feeling crappy. Don’t get into the habit of comfort shopping or comfort eating or drinking. No, that is not what we are discussing here. It’s been a regular day, or a great day, not a crappy day. Go ahead and buy yourself some flowers, or anything you’ve been waiting to buy or do.

Take that weekend vacation, this weekend. Life is not going to wait for you.

Step Five don’t worry, be happy.

The most important thing is to understand that you don’t need a reason to be happy. Just be happy. Be bright and candid. You don’t need a reason to smile; you don’t need a reason to be happy. If the world thinks you’re crazy, then that’s their problem, not yours. What others think is their headache, not yours. So stop worrying about things that are not your business, don’t make others’ business yours. Stop adding tensions to your life. You have to deal with enough already. So don’t worry, be happy. Just be happy!

Read a book, listen to some songs, hang out with friends, hug your parents, fight with your siblings, go for a walk. Whatever! Just learn to be happy, moment to moment, step by step, it’ll be a happier you!

Step No 6 : Find some ‘me’ time. Do what you like to do for yourself not what other want you to do. Be selfish for your own good.. Take sometime to introspect on the day..
